Does the recipient need an account in order to receive a Thankbox?

No, the recipient does not need to create an account in order to receive and open their Thankbox. 

When a Thankbox is sent the recipient is emailed a secure private link to it. This gives them access to the Thankbox collection if one exists. It also gives them the option to reply to everyone and share their Thankbox.
